The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was the largest Union veterans organization after the Civil War. Its structure ensured that it was always on a path to eventual decline, as only Union Civil War veterans could join. As these veterans aged, they began to consider how to pass on their legacy, leading to the creation of several allied groups:
At one point, the Woman’s Relief Corps was the largest women’s organization in the United States, boasting notable members such as Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Louisa May Alcott, and Susan B. Anthony.
Today, we honor the Grand Army and its allied orders, remembering their sacrifices that preserved our nation during its most perilous hour. We take pride in being the descendants of these remarkable men and women, standing on their shoulders.
Both the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW) are actively recruiting in Athens.
For Women: Rose Isgrigg, residing in Albany, is looking to reactivate Tent 100 in Athens. She needs ten women with a Union Civil War ancestor to come forward and join. Rose will assist with genealogical research. You can reach her at (740) 707-4151.
For Men: The John S. Townsend Camp of SUVCW has been experiencing a growth spurt and is recruiting new male members. Any male descendant of a Union soldier, sailor, or marine interested in joining can contact Carl J. Denbow at (740) 591-8471.
